I have become more of a lurker than a poster on the forum in recent weeks because I have become quite confused about how it works. I have been wanting to author a new "General Discussion" thread but I now don't know how to go about it without skrewing it up!

I'm still concerned that one seems unable to refer to other forum members' entries by inserting quotes from them without retyping them from scratch!

    Cut and paste, perhaps?

@Pommie - Part of the problem as I see it, is that when a user logs into the forum. It defaults the user to the "All Discussions" category. And according to tallguy, when you start a new discussion from that category, it automatically places the thread in the "Blogs" category. All you need to do to start a new discussion in the category you want, in this case "General Discussion", is to actually be within that category first (single left mouse click on the category you want) before clicking on the "Start a New Discussion" button. The category you are currently in will highlight black with gray letters. This should put your new thread in the proper category.

Do you know how to use the highlight, copy and paste functions to quote a user into the post you are making?

That doesn't seem to work. Maybe the fact that I am a Mac bloke using Safari from way back makes the difference?

    No!

@Pommie - This link should help you out:

    http://www.wikihow.com/Copy-and-Paste-on-a-Mac

Once you have the user's text pasted into the "Write Comment" box, highlight it again, and in the tool bar just above the area you type in, choose the "Font Color" option (Looks like a capital T with a square box of four colors next to it) to change the color of the text and also use the "Italic" tool bar button (Looks like a slanted capitol I) so as to differentiate the quote from the rest of your own text.

Keep in mind that this is just a (hopefully) temporary work around, as the Quote function has been broken in the latest version of this forum software upgrade.

    @Love_is,
    Yeah, thanks for that.
It used to be so easy under the old system but I have since found that writing a post in "Word" and then copying it and pasting it into the "Write Comment" box resulted in the original formatting being utterly screwed up, so I stopped doing it.
Maybe I'll give it another go when I have a mind to do so!

@Pommie  -  Ah! You were the one that had that problem. I didn't realize you were on Mac. Try highlighting, copying, and pasting your typed up post from Word, into TextEdit, and then highlight, copy, and paste from TextEdit into the "Write Comment" box here. This removes the special formatting that Word applies and this forum software interprets weirdly by turning it into just plain text.

  • I wish to thank @CT heartily for his latest enhancement of including tabs to Chat, Wiki, Blogs near the top of our Forum page giving us greater ease of navigation of our Aneros.com web site. And then look at other helpful tabs at the bottom of this page! Wow!

    Hi CT,

    Thanks for the changes.

I have a request.  In the listing of discussions show the name of the person who started the thread.  it was very helpful in the old forum.

Another request I was gonna make seems to be in place now, which is in the New Discussion dialog set the default Category to the Category I was looking at when I pressed Start Discussion

  • @CT dont know if anyone else is having problems but after the forum changes when I point at the add a smiley icon while entering text it says (remove Hyperlink) and I cant get the smilies to come up!

I just gotta have my smilies! help

@braveneworld - I'm not experiencing that problem on Firefox v18.0.1. There is no description when hovering the mouse over the button like the other buttons have. But the smiley drop down menu works correctly and adds the appropriate smilely into the write comment box.

@CT - You're welcome! And thank you for making the changes and fixes. I'd still like to see post numbers added to each thread like in the old forum. So a person can specify which post in a thread they are talking about or that someone should read. And also having the ability to quote text again in a post. Otherwise the features I use here in the forum are looking in pretty good shape.

Damn thing is herky-jerky and crashing all the time.  constant time-out notices, and Fatal-Errors.
  • @CT: i have the same problem like braveneworld with the smileys. the drop down menue DOESNT work, but the smileys drop down when i click here

the dropdown menue doesnt disappear when i click in the text window, i have to click the small area again or chose a smiley.

the smiley dropdown is not available when i edit a post.

the smiley code also doesnt get converted into actual smileys when i edit a post and type the code.

    i am using chrome
  • @CT - I have noticed that the information available in the "About" section (Username, Joined, Visits, Last Active, Roles, Posts) of a member's forum profile ( https://www.aneros.com/forum/profile/[username] ) including my own profile, isn't being shown.  Not sure if this was intended or not during the bedding in period.

Edit:  Actually, I just found out by accident that the information is there, it's just that the text colour and the background colour seem to be the same, so it appears blank (black).  I accidentally highlighted that section of the page, and the information appeared as highlighted text.  So it's there, just camouflaged.
  • @CT - I have also noticed that using the "Start a New Conversation" facility, to send a private message to another forum member, brings up a window that is not "right".  In case it matters, I am using Firefox v18.

I have attached an image file of the way it appears to me.  See how the area for the recipients is so small, and the recipient I chose (in this case CT) appears in the area where the main text goes.  Also, see how the "Start Conversation" button is inside the main text area and can obscure the text behind it.  Hope that helps.

The new "Chat / Blogs / Wiki" links are very low key, being just pink text centred in the header.

@CT - There still appears to be a bug with starting new discussions. I'm unable to start a new discussion using Firefox v18.0.1. There is no text field to enter the discussion title. And the Attach a file, Post Discussion, Save draft, Preview, and cancel buttons cover any text typed in the message field. I was going to post a screen shot of the problem, but the "Insert Image" button doesn't seem to allow uploading saved pictures from my computer. It wants me to enter a URL to display a photo from another web site.

  • Is this new "Blue and White" layout legit?  Are my eyes deceiving me?  I mean, this is a BIG change if so, but one that is quite pleasant!  It'll take some getting used to, but this looks really nice.

    ***Edit***

It seems that for a moment the entire forum was different in my browser.  The entire background was white with blue where the red usually is.  Everything was reverse too.  The tab options where all on the right instead of the left, and the three tabs at the top left were top center.  Again, not sure if it was a temporary fluke, but since it did happen, I wanted to share.  Too bad I didn't screenie because I thought it was a permanent change.

    Hey Everyone,

We uploaded some bug fixes today which hopefully resolves a few issues:

    1. Profile About section blank
    2. Smilie dropdown not appearing
    3. Unable to start new discussions

We are continuing to work on everything mentioned in this thread and will report back on any updates.

@rikaaim - What you saw was the forum default theme.  We temporarily switched to the default theme during some testing for the bugs.  Sorry for any confusion or problems during that time.

@Love_is - I will take a look into the bandwidth bug again.

    Thanks for all the feedback!!

Nice look to the new layout introduced today. Unfortunately, we seem to have lost the ability to see the difference between "new" and "read" threads. Perhaps this is a work-in-progress and I'm seeing an intermediate stage.

Somethink terrible has happened to the list of posts. I have rest my tablet a couple of times but the problem has not gone away. The text is too even and too big.
The post titles are no longer stand out. The title text seems small. The info about the title crowds out the title so it is difficult to read glance down the page an see the titles.
If this is the new format it is not going to be a pleasant experience to use
Of course it may be my tablet that has increased the size of the text

new look is fantastic. has brought back all the info as from the old forum.

only thing missing, as twlltin points out, is the count of new comments
  • new look is confusing. i do have a 24" monitor and i can barely read the info of 4 threads. scrolling with mouse wheel hurts my eyes, the threads jump around and its hard to browse for new unread threads.

please dont list all the info by creating new lines for every detail in such a big font size. new style is a lot less clear.

    @CT,

I agree with 'twlltin' & 'darwin' about bemoaning the loss of an identifierNOfor threads which have new posts.

This forces the reader to open and re-read posts unnecessarily, wasting his/her time in the process.Frown

Can you please reinstate the "New" post indicator?YES
imageThanks! Good Vibes to You ! image
  • Maybe a work in progress but so far I liked it better a number of days ago. It just does not look right now.
Hate to say it but there is now too much info or maybe it is just the way it is presented. I dont know it looks clinical now where it was homely. Hope that sums it up!

i think there must be different behavior with different browsers.  i see complaints about large font sizes and scrolling, etc.  can those of you with that problem please specify your OS and browser.

i am running in win7, chrome, and it looks great.   as i said, the only imperfection is the missing "4 New" indicator.

  • Hi @CT,

Thank you for all your hard work on all the updates. However I still see an overly large typeface on our Aneros Forum front page. Fortunately individual postings have regular typeface. I have Windows XP and use Google Chrome as my browser.

    Thom./BigGlansDC
  • @BigGlansDC I am using win XP and google chrome as well. The type face looks fine.
Make sure the zoom function in chrome is either 90% or 100%. 100% is better on my laptop as it is not wide screen.

@CT - I'm using LinuxMint 12 with Firefox v18.0.1. The "new" thread and "new" comments feature is still missing.

I also have a rather huge gripe regarding how you have rendered and squeezed the content to a very narrow band within the center of my monitor. I'm using a 25.5" monitor at 1920x1200 resolution, and not only is this a waste of monitor real estate, it's not very pleasant to read and type in this scrunched up format. If I had to guess, you folks are trying to accommodate the smart phone crowd. And I have to say that this is not a good compromise. No hardware platform, be it desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet, smart phone, should have the user experience suffer because of another type needing a layout in a different manner. This is the Microsoft Windows 8 way of doing things, where the desktop experience suffers greatly because they want the same graphical user interface for all devices. There has got to be a better way of doing this. And urge you folks at Aneros to find a better solution. Thank you.

My laptop screen's resolution is 1440x900 but I keep browser windows a maximum of 1024px wide. I like having a band down the side where I can have terminal windows, etc. The current arrangement of the forum looks great.

    And I wouldn't touch Windows 8 with someone else's bargepole. ;)

(You can't please everyone, of course.)

@twiltin - Understandable that that works for you. But honestly, the rendering of the web site should adjust to the window and screen resolution, whether maximized or not. Look at web sites like:

    http://www.slashdot.org

    and

    http://www.reddit.com

They both fill my screen when the browser window is maximized, and when I make the browser window smaller, they both adjust properly so all the same content is shown. So this is possible to do without negatively effecting how people choose to size their browser window and what the screen resolution is.

"And I wouldn't touch Windows 8 with someone else's bargepole."

I hear you! I wouldn't choose to use it either. But when you have to help friends and family with their computers. Shit happens. Got my first taste of Windows 8 with a dear friend's new laptop she needed help with. And I must say that I never thought I would have to research on the Internet on how to do just basic functionality in the graphical user interface of a Microsoft operating system. I swear I spent less time and effort figuring out the Gnome 2.x desktop environment many years ago when I first jumped on board Linux. Plus the new interface is less efficient, and more time consuming to do the same things we do on a more traditional desktop. Don't even get me started about all of the other problems Win8 has. Bleck! Microsoft can't put enough lipstick on this pig to make it attractive. The only thing saving their ass is their unethical leverage on the OEM's.
  • @CT, what a beautiful Aneros Forum redesign you have accomplished today! Thank you for all your hard work.
