Lubes (Shouldn't we have a sticky by now?)
  • (Or is the irony of a sticky thread about lubes just too much?)

I want a lube with these traits:

    1. safe in the long term
    2. long-lasting during a session
    3. not silicone-based (I use a Vice)
    4. (optional) doesn't require home brewing
    5. (even more optional) easy to apply and clean up

My top priority is that to the best of our knowledge (and educated guesses,) this lube is safe to use in the long term. I know there hasn't really done much research in this area. I'm hoping someone can give me some good info and ideas about what is and is not safe and why.

The other big thing is that I want the lube I use to last a long time during a session without the need for reapplication or any manual movement of the Aneros. I currently use KY and it does OK, but it does tend to stick after a while (~40 min), probably due to some absorption of moisture or maybe congealing of the lube... I don't really know. I know the stuff I used to use, PROBE thick 'n rich, had the same problem with even less of a grace period (~20 min). I'm hoping to do some overnight sleeping sessions once I get a new lube, one that can handle it.

I could possibly home brew a lube, but I'd rather not take the trouble, because I'd probably have to brew it late at night since I live in an apartment with roommates that I prefer to not really know what I'm into. Also, I'm not sure where I would store the brewed stuff if not in the fridge.

In all seriousness, shouldn't we have a sticky on this topic by now?

One of the more frequent conversations on this forum is about lube choices, and there are thousands of post on the subject, and a sticky thread about lube would very easally get out of hand. If you'd like something that last overnight, you're only option is to use something that is oil-based, the most popular being shea-butter.

My favorite lube is called SYLK, it's a lube that is water-soluble and made from natural ingredients and free from chemicals, hormones and parabens with a PH the same as your skin. It's not very thick, but it lasts for a very long time. It does contain glycerin, but since its vegetable glycerin, i dont seem to get a reaction from it.
This lube should be safe because it comes from natural ingredients, nothing weird (safe to eat, smells and taste kinda nice) and since it's water based its perfectly safe for your vice too.

    Ingredients:

    • Purified water
    • Kiwifruit plant extract (the main ingredience, the thing that creates the slippery feeling, you know the fruit kiwi right? a brown round fuzzy fruit with green fruitflesh inside, kinda love the taste of that fruit =)
    • Xanthan plant extract (it's a natural thickener/stabilizer that keeps the solids from separating, sugar based (usally from corn syryp)
    • Vegetable glycerine (another sugar related natural ingredient that binds water in a network structure, so the water doesnt go away..no water..no slippery stuff)
    • sodium citrate, citric acid,Potassium sorbate (preservative, comes from natural ingredients and lower the pH (making it sour, replicating the enviroment inside the vagina, germs don't like low pH)
    • Grapefruit seed extract (natural preservative)

    Hello, MindTravels.

There's persistent info about lubes in the Wki, linked at the top of every page on this website. as Cyrez pointed out, a sticky thread might get unwieldy due to length. Nonetheless, that's a good idea even if Support has to prune it periodically.

Finding a long-lasting and safe lube was a big concern of mine since I sleep with Aneros inside every night, (I know, not recommended, health hazard, yada, yada.) I coat my Vice with a thin layer of Vaseline, then apply a thin layer of Olive Oil. That combo lasts 8 hours. I'm thinking of switching from Olive to Walnut Oil, since it contains Omega 3, which is very desirable from a health point of view. Cost isn't a factor considering the small amount of oil required. An 8-ounce bottle of Olive Oil lasted 4 months and Vaseline clones are really cheap.

    Cheers,

    Dave

For water-based lubes, Slippery Stuff Gel is my favorite: it's super thick, it's super slippery, it's anal-safe, and so long as it's in your body (i.e., no air), it won't dry out. I've had it last over 8 hours and still push some out at my next BM.

There's an article about the safety of several lubes used in the anus, and Slippery Stuff Gel was at the top by a large margin:

AEGiS-CATIE News: Intriguing findings from study on lubricants - March 29, 2007

    Hope this is helpful.
  • I read the Aegis-CATIE report on the study. It says that Slippery Stuff Gel had the least potential of the lubes they tested to pull water out of cells, thereby damaging them and making the anus more susceptible to STDs, specifically HIV. That makes it possibly a better option for anal sex, but STDs aren't part of the picture with the Aneros. Any safety concerns with the Aneros are going to be a a matter of two things: 1. how the ingredients affect the tissue of the rectum--cancer being the only concern that comes to mind--and 2. how direct absorption into the bloodstream could have adverse effects on the rest of the body, in a variety of imaginable ways.

Rates of anal cancer are many times higher among gay men than among straight men, but after a bit of research, it appears that this is not so much due to any carcinogenic effects of any lubes used, but rather due to HPV. That's alleviated most of my concerns about lubes causing cancer.

I'm still somewhat concerned about the possible health effects of lubes in the other way. But maybe I should trust in the fact that a lot of people have been using them for years with no obvious adverse health effects. I guess I'm the kind of person that likes to know for sure, but in this area of study at this point in time that's pretty much impossible, so I guess I'll just have to go with it.

    Thanks for the help.

    About the 'other' health concerns:

Having lost both parents to colo-rectal cancer I share the cancer concern. So, I'm a fan of supplemental fiber, vitamin D and plenty of calcium.

I think there are other valid health concerns with the lubes we use. And it would be good if we had some means of easily exchanging and indexing anecdotal info regarding lubes rather than executing long searches through Forum posts.

The wide range of individual sensitivities makes is inadvisable to damn any one brand of lube; however, a constructive approach might be, "here's what I found and what you might look out for when using Brand-X"

This thread by MindTravels increased my awareness of possible lube issues in my own Aneros practice. Last week though I got serious about e-stim and what I felt was an e-stim reaction may instead have been from the lube I was using. I've posted that experience in binayfellow's thread.

Here are a couple of threads on "atypical" lube realated issues (other than lower GI symptoms):

    Cheers & regards ... Zenith
  • Thanks for the links! They're very informative. As someone pointed out in one of the threads, the fact that a product is edible doesn't necessarily mean that it's safe for rectal use, since when being used as a lube the compounds are not subject to digestion, as they would be if we were eating them. Still, edible things are probably going to be much safer than non-edibles. That thing about the Maximus lube is startling and really demonstrates how there is a real thing to be worried about here.

We like the Sliquid Sassy a lot! It is completely natural and made for anal play. Our other favourite is Sliquid Organics Gel - it is even better in terms of the ingredients (it is all organics). However, the Sassy is somewhat better for anal - subjective viewpoint :)

Agreed. I tried a lot of lubes, but as soon as I hit slippery stuff, I just stopped looking elsewhere. Make sure you get the GEL not the Liquid, and order from Amazon using Prime for free shipping if you are setup that way.

    Hello MindTravels, :)

Most definitely unrefined 100% shea butter (as a nut based oil) meets your requirements. I specifically use and recommend the Now Solutions (Now Foods) shea butter which I've been using for years now, from having tried a few different brands. But any type of shea butter that is pale yellow to white in color may also work. See the main shea butter thread for more information.
