Ran out of lubrication - what to do?
  • I've been away to vegas for the last week, just got back this morning and have tommorrow off, a whole day to myself and am desperate to have an aneros session, the thing is I have ran out of lubricant and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of what I could use instead like stuff around the house? In the past I have used my own saliva but have much better success with lubricant, and help would be great

    Cheers

I can think of a couple reasons not to go down to the store and buy some KY : It can get expensive after a while. :)

I've used vaseline/petroleum-jelly in the past and it's worked quite well. Also, in leu of vaseline, I've also used Crisco.

I imagine you could use olive oil, or heck, even butter, but I haven't tried those.

look into it a bit more. the general consensus seems to be that water based lubes are better as they are not absorbed by your rectum. there seems to be health concerns about the oil based lubes being absorbed, but, i don't know the details. there is much discussion elsewhere on the forum.

(B Mayfield has recommended a light coat of vaseline followed by water based lube, providing a water-oil interface that he says is very slippery. i haven't tried it yet)

as far as expense, i have been buying generic KY at CVS. its not too bad, but, i know what you mean, its more than vaseline.

another really excellent oil based lube (the absolute best for regular wanking) is a "moisturizing cleanser" called Abolene. its available in a tub at most drug stores for about $10. a tub will last a year. its main ingredients are mineral oil, vaseline and paraffin. it is the perfect thickness (thinner than vaseline, but still solid at room tempurature), is more slippery and lasts on the skin a long time. my wife loves it on her too.

I'm sorry, water based lubes are -not- absorbed by the rectum? I've always been under the assumption that that was the one of the purposes of the rectum -- to remove water from stool before it's evacuated. Also, am I incorrect in assuming that -WATER- based lubes always seem to dry up too quickly because of this water absorbing property of our nether-regions?

Sorry if I sound confrontational, I don't mean to be, but your comments seem to go against everything I've read in the past.

With that said, I am interested in possible health risks associated with oil-based lubricants being absorbed into the body. Do you have any posts in mind that I should look at? I will do a search after this post, but appreciate any direct-links. When we say oil-based, is there a difference in concern between say, vaseline, a fossil fuel by product, and a food-based product like Crisco, or olive oil?

about the rectum absorbing water, yes, it looks like you're right.

    (see http://www.health.state.ny.us/statistics/cancer/registry/abouts/colorectal.htm)

i dunno, maybe the issue is that the rectum is not "designed" to be coated with oil based lubes, which could interfere with natural water absorbtion, or perhaps serve as a medium to convey microbes into tissue they ordinarily wouldn't go (i believe i have read that prostate infections may sometimes come from the rectum). i just remember reading about it on this forum and concluding that i ought to stick to water based.

(perhaps the moderator will offer a health opinion here)

as far as water based lubes drying out, i don't think i've had much of a problem with that and the aneros. i assumed that was because inside the rectum there is little exposure to air which dries out the water-based lubes.

  • There are many oil based lubes and silicone based lube marketed for anal intercourse. I don't believe there is any issue of harm, but rather effectivness, ease of use and cleanup.

My preference is to use a thick water based lube (maximus) for injection and a thick silicone lube (eros gel) for coating the aneros. The eros is expensive, otherwise I would try it alone.

I tried to go back to where I read about this earlier on this site. Guess I have read to many threads here today can't find it. However if I recall right the concern with oil based lubes was clean up and allergic reaction.
went back and i found it... this is from B Mayfield-

Although some have reported success with the Aneros and oil based products, I firmly believe that the water soluable lubricants show several distinct advantages. First, they are not readily absorbed into the skin (as are oil based products). Considering that we're talking about some very delicate tissues in the anus and rectum, the water soluable products are simply the gentler alternative. I myself have found that the oil based products make me sore. In addition, because of the absorption of some of the oil based products, reapplication may become necessary. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, CLEAN UP IS A SNAP with the water based products.
  • Just to clarify the silicon lube properties.

It is not absorbed through the skin. It is even OK for vaginal use. (Oil is not). It is much more slipery initially and lasts longer than water or oil based lubes.

It is also costly and does not cleanup with water.
